Care of the self encompasses many levels, but perhaps the first step in self care is self-awareness that really turns inward and asks, what do I really need? Self care that begins with that question may address the obvious issues with the body: good nutrition, enough exercise and plenty of sleep, the main bodily needs. Once the body is set the creative self may pop up and ask, what about me? Take time to allow the creative to come forth, for this is practice for your spirit to become more known to you, your intuitive self. Let it be more known by first paying attention to your creative needs, whatever they may be. Over time you will hear the voice of your spirit more clearly and when this happens you will realize how well you have been caring for your whole self.

Take care of yourself the same way you would care for someone else. It’s so easy to make someone else special, to give to another. Why not take some time and give a little to yourself? Most people are not used to giving to themselves. Most people are used to caring for and about others. Take some time to assess your own situation. Are you taking care of yourself in a good way? Are you allowing balance and harmony into your life? Are you holding yourself to good standards of nurturance and care? Think about it and then do the right thing, for you.

Do not part ways with your spirit, with the part of you that holds you close and dear, that wants you to grow and evolve. When you forget this part of yourself it wonders why you are so hard on yourself, and why you’ve forgotten that this is your real self. It seeks always to guide you and help you, even when you don’t notice or don’t care. To stay connected, keep your heart open. For that is where you will find your spirit connection, in your openheartedness, in the goodness and friendliness of your heart, where every one and every thing is acceptable, without judgment, including you!

Find a spiritual discipline that you can rely on to nurture yourself during difficult times. It can be something as simple as taking a walk alone in a quiet setting, or sitting for a few minutes in a special spot, or simply taking a few minutes to breathe and calm the body and mind. This will provide a quiet contrast to the racket going on around you. It will comfort you and steady you. It will offer a slight respite from the chaos that abounds. It will bring you a few moments of peace and serenity.

Continually and consciously find your balance. Tune into your body, your central nervous system and your emotional state throughout the day. Notice what is going on inside. Are you calm? Centered? Feeling peaceful? Or are you the opposite of those states? Why? Suggest to yourself that as you tune in that you also close your eyes for a moment or two. Breathe. Let go of what is currently on your mind and just be in the moment. Breathe deeply a few times. Notice how you feel physically, mentally and emotionally. Self care can be as simple as that to begin with. Just pause, breathe, and let go with a sigh. Simple.
