Find a spiritual discipline that you can rely on to nurture yourself during difficult times. It can be something as simple as taking a walk alone in a quiet setting, or sitting for a few minutes in a special spot, or simply taking a few minutes to breathe and calm the body and mind. This will provide a quiet contrast to the racket going on around you. It will comfort you and steady you. It will offer a slight respite from the chaos that abounds. It will bring you a few moments of peace and serenity.

Find peace and calmness in the minutest of things, in the first spring flowers, in the first warm breezes of the season, in the trickle of running water in a stream, in the budding and flowering trees. Find calmness in the sound of your feet upon the ground, the crunch of gravel, the rustle of old leaves beneath your feet. Look up, look down, look all around you. You are not alone. The whole world is your companion.

It’s not that hard to calm the central nervous system. Look at a beautiful picture, and breathe deeply. Imagine a place that is special to you, and breathe deeply. Close your eyes, and breathe deeply. Sit in the light of the sun, and breathe deeply. Take a walk, and breathe deeply. Sit beside water, and breathe deeply. Gaze at the night sky, and breathe deeply. There are so many opportunities in a day to get calm, to take care of yourself for a few moments, and to align with your own spirit. Just do it, just breathe.

Strive always to maintain a certain kind of balance. Make choices that keep you in a good frame of mind, in good physical shape, and that are spiritually nurturing. Do not be overcome by anything but seek always a measure of calmness so that emotions are handled as they arise. Sometimes excess is appropriate but on a daily basis modesty and moderation are most appropriate in all things.

When the mind revs with worry, slow it down with the breath, by focusing on breathing in and out deeply, by counting the breath, the holding time, and the exhalation. Give the mind a rest by refocusing it on something productive, for a mind that spins out of control is good for nothing. Let the spirit take over and bring you out of your spin and into a place of calmness, into peaceful oneness with nature, inside and out.

Sending you love,
