Set your intent to change and like a dog searching for a buried bone go after it with all you’ve got. Sometimes you’ll get off course, but like that dog with its superior nose, get right back on it again. Change can happen overnight, unforeseen change, but most intended change takes a slower more determined route requiring attention, discipline, the ability to say no and the capacity to actually take beneficial action so that the path of change remains the main focus. It is a struggle, as anyone who has sought to change a habit will note, but struggle is what marks that change is actually taking place. Keep your struggle alive by pushing it along, like that little dog with its nose to the ground, one step and one day at a time.

How does one stay upon a path of heart? There are so many opportunities to stray from one’s path of heart, for there are so many ways to live one’s human existence. And yet, it is the practice of strong intent mixed with a measure of discipline that provides one with the perfect balance so that one’s path of heart is not so often interfered with by old ideas, thoughts and habits—the particulars of an old life that interrupt the heart-centered way. No matter what comes to interfere, remember: the path of heart still lies at your feet. So, carry on!

Steer clear of that which gets you down. You’ve had so many experiences so you know what it is that gets you down and keeps you down in a passive, negative state. Turn instead in the direction of your new path of heart until it becomes your automatic choice, until, without noticing it, you go there so seamlessly and with the joy of knowing that finally you have found your way. It’s not that hard to turn away from an old routine, but it does take discipline to stick with it, so remain alert and aware as you tread upon new ground. Pretty soon it will become a new well-worn path, but one of heart and invigorating life. With heart centered intent, move into a new day.

Maintain inner stability at all times. Place yourself under house arrest by keeping yourself to a certain standard of inner control. Stay grounded and centered even while you are pulled in a direction you no longer wish to go in. Stay connected to your spirit, the part of you that is often neglected and yet which is you. With inner control of yourself, the way forward may be more measured, contained, and bearable, all the things that make progress in a new direction possible, for to say you are going to do something is one thing, but to actually do it is another. Action takes discipline and commitment, and that’s also how to keep your inner house in order and yourself on your path of heart, with intent.

Recycle fear into love, worry into calmness, and persistent thoughts of doom into kindness, just as you recycle plastic into items of usefulness. Turn that which no longer works for you into something that provides positive energy that can be used for the greater good of self and other. Use the power of your intent, combined with discipline, to enact a new plan for life that is sustainable, healthy, and good. In this manner, carve a new path of heart that will bring that which is needed into your life.
