Chuck’s Place: A Pain In The Back

OW!!!
-Artwork © 2026 Jan Ketchel

A day with nothing required to do, hence the beginning of a creative cycle. I decide to tackle splitting some wood that has been waiting.

I drive my pickup truck to the pile of logs. The first thing I notice when I open the door is that there is no annoying buzzing, which always happens when I leave the key in the ignition and open the door.

I’m dumbfounded! Fourteen years with this truck and this has never happened before. Several times I reinsert  the key, open and close the door, and the same anomaly repeats—no noise!

Little did I realize that this key event was prompting me to become lucid, as I was being ushered into a journey of non-ordinary reality. I next grabbed my maul, walked over to, and stared at, the wood to be split. Suddenly, my back, at the level of the sacrum, seized, as if struck by a giant weight! The pain was excruciating and I was afraid to move.

My mind knew that I had done absolutely nothing to cause this experience, but the excruciating pain I was gripped by sure was physically real! I immediately turned to my trusty first-aid mantra to my subconscious mind and incessantly repeated, “My back is healing, my back is healed.”

Nothing doing, nothing changed. I lumbered to the truck and drove back to the house, recounting the experience to Jan. When I went to demonstrate the magical key in the truck ignition, the magic was gone; the annoying buzzing returned, along with my aching back.

I questioned the obvious psychosomatic possibility that my body was just telling my mind that it wasn’t up to the splitting task I’d assigned it. The truth is, however, that my body had been in terrific shape and I was not pushing it beyond its energetic capability.

I considered a number of physical remedies but came to the very clear realization that this was not a physical problem, as had been clearly shown to me. I did absolutely nothing to cause the physical ailment, however real the physical symptoms were. I chose to meet the spirit behind the symptoms head on, on spirit terms.

So many times over the years, clients have had acute, powerful physical symptoms that have warranted a trip to the ER. On some occasions this resulted in a much needed physical treatment, however, in many cases the final diagnosis was a panic attack.

We came to discover that, often, the precursor to recovering a new memory during the process of traumatic recapitulation is, in fact, panic—a natural defense that warns of the coming intrusion into consciousness of disturbing material, often associated with physical pain. So? Was I in the midst of a traumatic recapitulation?

Jan did remind me of similar symptoms I had grappled with several years ago. At that time, I realized I was energetically incapacitated by allowing myself to assume responsibility for burdens that were not my own. That realization had ultimately lifted the extreme weight I had experienced, in dense form, in my back.

Subsequent to that realization years ago, I had firmly programmed my subconscious mind to refuse outside suggestions that could be harmful to me. I knew that we energetically live in a completely interconnected universe, where the thoughts and actions of others are subtlety detected by, and can impact, the subconscious mind. So, how could this hurtful energetic suggestion from without have slipped through now?

The answer is obvious to me. My subconscious was infiltrated because somewhere I was colluding with the outside energy, thus actually inviting the experience I had. My overriding suggestion to my subconscious mind has always been to live in truth. In this case, I was led to an issue I had to more deeply examine and adjust my attachment to.

The back journey I was on was orchestrated by my High Self to help me become aware of this impediment to growth. Sometimes we have to learn the hard way.

Are you wondering if my back has healed? The answer is that there was nothing physical to heal.

This experience has been an energetic dialogue, along with an emotional process, that was initiated by and resolved with Spirit, which momentarily took possession of the flesh.

I have to end now, as I go attend to outdoor tasks.

Stay well,
Chuck

Chuck’s Place: The High Self’s Relationship With The Subconscious Mind

Suggestion from the High Self…
-Artwork © 2026 Jan Ketchel

Our Eternal Spirit, in living a human life, which requires a beginning and an end to life, divides itself into a trinity of High Self, subconscious mind, and ego. High Self and subconscious mind maintain their divine identity during our sojourn in human form, while ego is solely identified with a mortal life in a physical body.

Since High Self retains its Spirit identity, it remains always present and observant, but largely dormant in daily life, unless solicited or drawn into action at some critical juncture in ego’s human life.

The subconscious mind, however, maintains its divine identity through its ability to make manifest in physical form any suggestions impressed upon it. It also exercises complete control over the maintenance of the human body, as well as retaining access to all human history, knowledge, and divine intelligence.

Before birth in physical form, one’s Spirit selects the issue or challenge the ego will be born with, for the purpose of deep exploration and resolution—that which will become experienced as the core issue, or purpose, of the ego’s human life.

The intent of this life challenge is, ultimately, for Spirit to grow through the knowledge and maturity gained by ego living out its human life and tackling its core purpose.

Before birth, ego agrees to this mission and consents to enter a human life with amnesia of this contract and its true immortal Spirit identity. Ego is then born through its human parents, with a blank slate consciousness, unaware of its true spiritual heritage and purpose, fully primed to adopt to life in mortal human form.

Much has been written about ego’s relationship with its subconscious mind, where ego unknowingly exercises its divine prerogative. With growing awareness, ego learns more about its innate ability to direct the power of suggestion to its subconscious mind, as it takes increasing conscious command of manifesting the life it intends.

Throughout ego’s earthly exploits the divine subconscious allows itself to be used to manifest ego’s suggestions, even if they are detrimental to the human life it is living. The subconscious does not judge motives, nor does it moralize; it simply exercises its divine ability to manifest the suggestions impressed upon it.

The design here is for ego to grow through the direct experience of the effects or outcomes of its choices and actions. Divinity does not punish; it grants ego its wishes and gives it the full experience of the outcomes of its beliefs, desires, and actions. Ego is fully responsible for its own growth.

Spirit, as High Self, is fully present. However, it remains quite passive, leaving ego to tackle its core issues on its own. However, if directly solicited by ego, High Self may give the subconscious mind the suggestion to manifest an outcome in support of ego on its journey.

This is illustrated in AA, where the first step is for the alcoholic to acknowledge powerlessness over the compulsion to drink alcohol. The second step is to acknowledge a power greater than ego, a Higher Self. The third step is for ego to ask High Self to exercise its power to lift one’s compulsion to drink. An alcoholic in recovery often experiences success at this third request, as the High Self suggests to the subconscious mind, who has total control over the body, to lift the compulsion to drink.

Many people who experience a near death experience (NDE) report that they are given the choice to return to life on Earth or to die in human form and continue their journey in infinity. However, sometimes ego is denied this choice, as High Self insists one return to life in the physical body. High Self, in this instance, is insisting that ego dig in deeper to its mission, its contract for the life it is in.

Jan shares this experience:

“It was 1989. I was with my former husband and my 6-month-old son, driving along a major highway in Nashville, Tennessee. My son was fussy and I kept turning around to comfort him. We were heading to a mall. There were two exit options. We had decided we would take the second exit, as it would bring us slightly closer to our destination. As I turned to my son, reaching back with my left arm, I was aware of the large blue cab of a tractor trailer bearing down on us, coming closer and closer. I sensed that my infant son could also feel the energy of this large blue force, as I could not console him. All of a sudden the atmosphere in our small compact car got very quiet, my son stopped screaming, everything seemed to slow down and we glided effortlessly off the highway onto the first exit, the one we had decided not to take. “Why did you turn off here?” I asked my husband. “I don’t know,” he said. “I just did.” Within seconds there was an accident. The large blue truck that had been behind us smashed into a van that had been in front of us, killing most of the occupants, including several children. Our small car would have been crushed like an accordion, our little family gone in an instant. We had sensed our car being driven off the road by some other, higher, intelligence that knew what was coming. It was not our time.”

Once again, we have an example of High Self intervening, instructing the subconscious mind to take physical control and exit the highway. From the vantage point of now, it is obvious that the High Self was determined to preserve Jan’s life to complete a recapitulation, or soul retrieval, of her early life of sexual abuse, the core issue of her life.

High Self is that portion of our Spirit that can be called upon for guidance as we journey through this life. It might respond via direct communication in vision, dream, or channeling. It might also suggest directly to the subconscious mind a path of events synchronistically arranged to communicate its guidance.

Be empowered to seek guidance and support from High Self and subconscious mind. Trust that High Self will protect your ability to complete your mission in this life, or continue it beyond this life, if it is the right time to leave.

With Gratitude to High Self,
Chuck

Awkward moments arise every day and you may not know what to do, how to react, or what choice to make that will soothe a situation or move you forward out of a stuck situation and into some much-needed enlightenment. When such moments arrive, simply shut your mouth and pause. Let some calmness in. Breathe. There is always time to take a breath. In the moment of inhale ask for guidance, and in the moment of exhale listen. In the pause of the outbreath let some other part of you, that knows exactly what to do, come forth. Let that part of you take over and speak the right word, take the right action, and do the right thing. You might not know why this works, but it does, and that’s all you need to know. All you need to do is give thanks for the connection you are making between your worlds: within and without; above and below.

All our love,

It’s not too hard to fall into an old pattern. Notice how easily old ideas and beliefs slip out of your mouth when you speak and how fast they reassert themselves in your mind when you forget that you are a spiritual being, first and foremost. Keep in mind your High Self that we spoke of earlier and your Innocent Self that we encourage you to reintroduce into your life. Let these two selves, parts of your wholeness, be more fully present every day. Let them speak more often, lead more often, and think more often. Let their voices come into focus more keenly now so that the old beliefs and habits, so ready to jump in and take over, have something to fear.

All our love,
The Soul Sisters, Jan & Jeanne

When darkness comes, remember that it is always followed by light, just as night is followed by a new day. Keep this in mind as you fathom what is going on in the world you live in, as you ponder how best to respond and as you face your fears of global collapse and universal war. Keep also in mind that there is another side to everything. Just as there is light following dark, there is also that which you can see clearly in the light of day and that which you cannot see at all in the dark but you know exists nonetheless. Spirit reality exists simultaneously with human physical reality and both aspects are alive and well and working together. You may not always be aware of this, but your dreams show you how they communicate and how they interact, bringing you what you need to learn and face. Stay connected to this truth, that spirit and matter are two sides of one thing, your human self.

Sending you love,
The Soul Sisters, Jan & Jeanne
