Chuck’s Place: Attention

Energy travels many paths…

Energy is blood at the ethereal level. Blood is the carrier of the vital life source in the physical body. Energy is the active life force in the energy body. As sometimes we may require a blood transfusion to preserve life in the physical body so the energy body seeks energetic enhancement through exchanges of energy at the ethereal level.

Actually, we can notice this energetic transmission of energy on the physical plane through the exchanges of everyday life. Attention is a form of energy. When we give something our attention we transfer some of our vital energy to it, which then enlivens it in some form.

However subtle, we can often feel in some way that someone has their attention upon us. Often it might register as a sudden thought about the person who is thinking about us or actually looking at us, even from behind.

Human beings often interpret attention as a form of validation. Attention is currency. Like money, it fills us with value and worth.  This can result in attention seeking behavior. The greater the attention given, the greater the feeling of personal worth. This was the theorem Mark Zuckerberg exploited with the launching of Facebook: the more friends who like us, the better we feel about ourselves.

The Shamans of Ancient Mexico were well aware of the energetic dynamic of attention seeking behavior. In fact, they determined that our human obsession with validation monopolizes the lion’s share of our vital energy through our entire lifetime.

The experience of being validated may deliver a temporary  energetic boost. In actuality it proves to be an energetic drain when factoring in the amount of mental and emotional energy spent each day seeking attention and validation from the outside world.

The shamans teach us to become energy misers. They employ techniques to free themselves of the energy drain of upholding self-importance through external validation. They relish opportunities to release themselves from being offended, a major source of energy drain in human interaction.

If we can release ourselves from being offended by others whose narcissism prevents them from seeing or valuing us, in fact even causes them to bully us, then we are actually storing tremendous caches of energy. Releasing ourselves from any attachment to victimhood is central to this practice.

This doesn’t mean we simply turn the other cheek. In fact, we might have to actually fight back, but our approach is not driven by rage or revenge or preserving self-importance but is simply a pragmatic response to the challenge presented, based on what is possible in a given situation.

The energy gained and stored through losing self-importance allows that energy to be redeployed toward exploration of one’s true purpose for coming into this world, as well as the ability to explore life in other dimensions of infinity while still in physical form.

Best use of attention is to observe the tendency to be offended by others. Identifying it enables a process of detachment that both saves and frees energy for spiritual deployment.

Attentively,

Chuck

In our energy bodies…

Is it a particle or is it a wave? Physicists have come to the conclusion that it is both. Sometimes it, (that is, our self) appears in solid form, sometimes in pure energy form.

Don Juan, Carlos Castaneda’s teacher added that we are always energy first. What we call physical is a specific configuration of energy that has materialized into a solid form. Nonetheless, our solid physical form regularly shifts into its energetic essence.

This happens to us automatically every night in dreaming. A part of our solid energy form dissolves into its energy body state where it is free to travel the universe in an instant with such lightness of being.

Dreaming allows the energy body to be bathed in pools of energy that release the stress accumulated in the physical body during its daytime encounters in the dense physical world. If we are denied our REM sleep, our energy body dreaming state, we lose our physical and mental ability to function coherently.

Our ultimate Self, what we might call our Soul, resides in our energy body. The basis for this conclusion is the fact that the energy body  does not die when the physical body dies. Our energy body consolidates all of our energy at the time of physical death and then flies off into infinity.

Our nightly energy body dreams are the gateway to explorations in infinity while we are still securely attached to our physical body that lies in deep, frozen, space-time rest while we journey. This attachment remains firm until the cord is cut when we undertake our definitive journey into infinity at the time of our death.

Consciousness is retained beyond the physical world of space-time. We experience this while in physical form in our nightly dreams with our energy body. We are fully capable of thinking and reasoning in our dreams, however, our physical capacities are actually thought imagery projections in dreaming as our physical body is held in a state of transitory paralysis while in REM sleep. Sleep walking is actually a failure of this suppression of the physical body in dreaming, which results in active physical accompaniment to a dream.

In ordinary dreaming the energy body releases the physical and emotional energies and entanglements from a day of waking life. Lucid, shamanic, and out-of-body explorations are more advanced forms of dreaming where consciousness is aware it is in a dreaming state and great control is exerted over staying present to the expanded opportunities for exploration in this altered energetic state.

The great energy of now is offering all of us a terrific boost of energy to discover and cultivate our latent potential to expanded awareness and exploration in our energy body’s nightly adventures. What was once the province of shamans and advanced yogis and monks is now available to all seekers who embrace the intent to retain awareness in dreaming.

All roads lead to the energy body, the carrier of our infinite soul. Enjoy it, explore with it, find the answers to the mystery of your soul’s intent with it. Dream on!

Chuck’s Place: The New Religion

C. G. Jung suggested that a living religion for the future would accent the embodiment by all humans of their divine nature. He anticipated that the Christian projections of a redeemer, a God/man “out there” who carries the weight of the human shadow would evolve into an internalized divinity reckoning with its own humanness.

In shamanic terms, this would represent the awakening of the energy body to live alongside the human body. Experientially, this is the appreciation and cultivation of the energy body in dreaming, as well as in waking life. Presently, the energy body is dominated by the mental plane with its centralized leitmotif of reason. The mental plane is actually part of the energy body, though our physical focus and reason would have us locate it only in the brain and central nervous system. However, there are other ideas on the matter.

A preponderance of documented traumatic out-of-body experiences—remote viewing of one’s body or another’s body on the other side of the room or the other side of the world—clearly demonstrate that the mind operates independently from the physical body.

The Hindus have long pointed out that the outermost shell of the energy body is the mental body. When we leave our body for good, at physical death, we leave as mental beings, as consciousness. This mental spirit, as we experience it in everyday life, is monopolized by our ego as it uses its powers to uphold and reinforce the validity of the solid physical world we live in for the duration of our physical lives. Only that which is solid is real, the ego says.

However, if we willingly or unwillingly undergo the crucifixion of that fixated hold on the solid world and move from ego consciousness to energy consciousness, the world softens. And as the world softens we move into the greater ability of our energy body to broaden our knowledge of life beyond the ego’s familiar boundaries. As we move into an enhanced energy body perspective, what the shamans call a shift in the assemblage point, all that once bound us, like our petty resentments and our fears, melt away as we move into a state of transcendent awe. We simply can’t stay attached to a personal solid world once we’ve experienced its total lack of solidity; we leave that nailed to the cross as we experience a far more interconnected world of energy.

This dissolving of solidity allows for the erasing of personal history, the state of detachment that the shamans describe as being one of the most important aspects of an evolutionary life. It’s not unfeeling detachment; it’s utter love for everything, all beings equal. Whereas once, in solid form, we held so tightly to our personal love, our personal family, our personal tribe, we are now totally detached and yet totally loving of all that is. This detachment is not a sacrifice of those we love, but an evaporation of the boundaries of our separate love, for all, we discover, is love.

And we can continue to walk upon the earth calmly owning our dual nature: as spirit/energy beings living in, in relation with, a physical body that temporarily houses this spirit self. We can indeed continue to fulfill all the human roles we have been in, but we must now also learn greater cohesion when in our spirit state, which gives us the fluidity to maintain our calmness as we experience the expanded awe of our interconnectedness and living oneness with all that is.

We can learn to playfully flit between the two awarenesses, solid and energy, but it’s really all preparation for the moment when the exclusive personal ego accepts its final crucifixion, when the relativity of personal human life is reconciled with the greater expanded view, and the energy body is finally set to more fully explore beyond the limits of space and time.

Jung’s suggestion as to where religion might find itself in the future is well prepared. Perhaps Eastern religions, shamanic practices, and modern science may eventually find their rightful places in redeeming the God/human schism of our time.

Prayerfully,

Chuck

Chuck’s Place: Energy Body Development

The human body perceives the world through its five senses. Beyond the sensory inputs of touch, smell, sight, sound, and taste that operate through the physical body, there are the faculties of thought and feeling, which operate separately from the physical, through the energy body.

The energy body is attached to the physical body. It downloads its inputs through the chakra points of entry in the physical body, which are then interpreted through the central nervous system and the brain.

The energy body and the physical body operate as a single unit during the day. However, at night they separate. As the physical body sleeps, the energy body leaves. It remains attached to the physical body by a cord, while it goes off into other dimensions of experience, i.e. into the astral world, where it interacts with other energy bodies also operating on a similar frequency. Dreams may often reflect the residual memory of these beyond-the-physical-body escapades.

We experience the separateness and autonomy of the physical body and the energy body, very distinctly, when we drive a car. As we drive, the physical body perceives the physical stimuli of the road; stop signs, other cars, pedestrians, weather conditions, etc. Meanwhile, the energy body may be miles or dimensions away, as it lives or relives experiences in its thoughts and feelings.

Accidents are frequently caused by too great a separation of these two bodies. Disasters can occur if the consciousness of the energy body, off in another world of thought, is suddenly required by the physical body. More consciousness than simple body memory is often required to navigate through some driving situations.

This bilocation of physical body and energy body is actually evident in all of waking life. If we pay attention, we might notice our thoughts and feelings taking us far away from our physical reality, as we drift through the day, in and out of virtual daydreams.

Under waking conditions of shock or trauma, the separation of physical and energy body may occur spontaneously. In such cases, this abrupt dissociation of bodies offers a protective measure to modulate the full impact of the trauma in vivo. The fuller integration of consciousness—seated in the energy body—with the events experienced by the physical body, may need to be postponed until the two bodies are ready to absorb and process the full truth of the traumatic experience. Thus traumas may be completely forgotten, only to emerge later as buried memories and/or psychosomatic pain.

In contrast, Shamans, Buddhists, and Hindus, as well as out-of-body explorers, cultivate the conscious use of Intent to willfully explore in the energy body, volitionally entering into the astral realm to prepare for a smooth transition beyond human life when the cord is cut between the human and energy body, as the physical body dies and the energy body moves on its own into infinity.

We can all cultivate a volitional exploration of the energy body in everyday life. Thoughts and feelings are energetic entities after all, messengers from our energy body that extend way beyond the confines of the physical. Everyone has had the experience of thinking of someone and then suddenly hearing from them or running into them. On Saturday, I ran into two people I hadn’t seen in years, but had thought of less than an hour earlier.

To put it simply: thoughts and feelings are magnetic energies that attract physical realities. This is the operating principle behind the Law of Attraction and Intent. All the major religions advocate this same principle in the use of prayer. Prayers are codified energetic intentions that attract energetic reactions from one energy body to another or to energetic entities residing at a much more sophisticated energetic level. Some people call this magnetic attraction, contact with God.

When we send out loving, compassionate intentions to others in the world, they are receiving, at some energetic level, the support of our messages. We are told to avoid the trap of attaching to outcome, to expectations for our prayers and intentions, but we must remain aware that these practices do have impact at some level. Even though we may not receive the desired outcome of our efforts, we must know that the intent has landed on target and will work in a way that is most appropriate.

Thoughts and feelings are subtle energetic messengers, as alive as you or I. They travel on an equally subtle interconnected highway of energy, much like the interconnected transmission of messages on the internet. The ability to hone where we place our attention and intention, as developed through the practice of meditation, develops our ability to take in thoughts and feelings with choice and to be equally choosy in how and what we transmit.

In other words, just as we can choose to explore with our energy body in dreaming, by intending to become aware, we can also choose to be equally focused and responsible in the use of our thoughts and feelings while awake, honing the messages we transmit along the energetic superhighway of our everyday world.

Am I sending a good and helpful message to so-and-so? Am I sending a positive message to myself? Is that a harmful thought? Is that a necessary or appropriate feeling to have right now? How will that thought or feeling impact everyone else in the room?

Knowing that our thoughts and feelings are energetically alive offers us entry into the energetic world of true reality, as well as a myriad of possibilities in the world of our energy body beyond this world. Subtle though it all may be, it’s not that hard to test. In the end, what matters most is deciding to use our thought and feeling energy wisely, responsibly, and compassionately, for ourselves and others.

With loving thoughts and feelings,
Chuck

Chuck’s Place: The Host & The Guest

Body self, spirit self housed together in life... - Photo by Jan Ketchel
Body self, spirit self housed together in life…

The body self is a finite creature; it will die. The spirit self, the energy body, houses the infinite part of ourselves, that which separates forever from the earthy host, the physical body, at the time of its death.

The relationship between the host (the physical body) and the guest (the energy body) during our lifetime is our most important and challenging relationship. The physical body knows its days are numbered and seeks fulfillment of its instinctive nature in the physical world during life. Fulfillment in physical terms is connected to security, sex, and power in the material world of people and things.

The energy body enters its host, the physical body, with its intention to sow its karmic seeds through the drama of human life by which it has the opportunity to advance its ongoing journey in infinity at the death of the physical. The truth is, the body is not that interested in soul work. The body, like all animals, is here and now, in its instinctive life, which it so covets. Enjoying and experiencing the joys, pleasures, and triumphs of this life is the sole intent of the physical body; there is nothing more.

The energy body, in contrast, is far more expansive. The energy body is comprised of mind and feeling, and though both become active in the physical brain and heart, they are, in spirit form, of a far more ethereal nature, capable of a far greater expansiveness and abstraction way beyond human boundaries. For instance, love, at the energy body level, can expand to include all interconnected life. At the level of the physical body, however, “love” does not extend beyond me and mine.

At this point, I nearly abandoned this blog. I had drawn a blank as how to illustrate the challenge of the conflicting intent of the physical and spirit selves. I went to sleep and awoke from the following vivid dream experience:

A gangster had seriously threatened a woman. He came to my home to discuss it. I let him in with four of his cronies. I directly confronted him. “You have to go to her and make it right; begin by apologizing,” I said. Then I noticed over my right shoulder that one of his men was holding a bungie cord, awaiting the signal from the gangster boss to strangle me.

I looked into the gangster boss’s eye and said, “So, you’re going to kill me.” A moment before I had seen an expression on his face that was acknowledging the wrong he had done, a glint in his eye. I thought there was a genuine moment of redemption, but now I saw he was really lazy. It was easier to simply snuff out any possible threat to his operation, rather than risk change.

Oddly, I wasn’t afraid of the confrontation, more observant of the true predicament. I somehow knew I would subdue the group of them, though at the moment I wasn’t sure how. It wasn’t the threat that consumed me, it was the disappointment in his refusal to acquiesce to the light of the truth that shone in our encounter. He was choosing to remain cold-bloodedly instinctual, snuffing out the light of spirit, change, and growth.

Awakening from the above dream, I thanked my unconscious for the dream. The dream typifies the inner drama we all must confront with our physical, instinctive body host who remains governed by the archetypes of power and self-centered survival. This is the body self that wants survival, food, sex, and power at a purely instinctual level. This self will cold-bloodedly execute any spirit that asks it to transmute its own instincts in service of a higher cause.

On the other hand, the spirit self, with its own agenda for life in this world, can be a completely ungracious guest, treating its body host like a slave and servant, completely in bondage to the proclivities of the spirit. I defer to Arianna Huffington’s commencement speech at Vassar College, linked HERE, to expand upon abuse of spirit power inflicted not only on the body, but also on the world body that now finds itself in mass revolt at the misguided governorship of humankind.

The symbiotic relationship of spirit and body self while the spirit resides in human form requires responsible leadership based on right action. Right action flows from love centered in the heart chakra. The body is a conservative host to a liberal spirit guest whose quest is evolutionary advancement.

As my dream points out, the body, in its conservatism, would kill off any attempt to elevate its spirit above its instinctive rigidity. On the other hand, a spirit guest that exploits its body host for its desirous intrigues is a leader that breeds revolution and assassination.

Spirit self must acquiesce, from the heart center, to leadership in accordance with truth—that which is all-inclusive love. Spirit that acts from this place offers a path of evolutionary advancement to its body host, who in turn can acquiesce with support to fair leadership from its guest. A tenuous balance indeed, but not unachievable.

The challenge is to become the gracious guest who leads its willing servant to new heights so that, in the end, guest and host dissolve their apparent distinctions and join in consciousness, as optional expressions of the same oneness, e.g., as body and energy body, spirit and matter, sun and moon, particle and wave.

And so, the journey continues,
Chuck
